Fire safety advice for landlords

In 2012 to 2013 the fire and rescue service attended 192,600 fires. More than a third of the fires which were in homes and dwelling didn’t have a fire alarm, so these fires could have potentially been stopped if a smoke alarm had alerted any residents. 31 % of them had no smoke alarms present but 19% had poorly fitted or smoke and fire alarms that did not work. This makes up 50% of fire attended in homes would have been stopped and prevented by a having a domestic smoke.

It’s not just the damage to property that can be stopped but also preventing the loss of life. In 2012/2013 the death rate in homes without a domestic smoke detector was double of that in a house with a fire alarm.  This has been the case for the last 5 years, and is proof something as small a battery or wireless smoke alarms can save your life.

Landlords have certain legal obligations when it comes to fire safety and protection of their properties and the safety of people who reside in their premises.
Legislation requires that landlords carry out fire risk assessments in all areas of their rented properties. This process will identify any fire hazards and who is at risk and decide if anything needs to be done to remove or reduce that risk.
